Carrie Singleton is a Lecturer in the Social Futures Institute and a Research Fellow in the Centre for Social and Policy Research (CSPR) (http://www.tees.ac.uk/depts/socialfutures/CSPRprofile.cfm ) at the University of Teesside, where she coordinates research projects and teaches social research methods and the sociology of international development. Carrie is also a member of the interdisciplinary WISER (Web 2.0 in Social Environments) research group and the Community Media Network and recently coordinated the Gender Research Forum Seminar Series in the School of Social Sciences and Law. Her most recent research includes a study into Web 2.0 use by older people and a project exploring community ICTs in rural and coastal communities. In 2007, Carrie was a senior researcher on the ESF-funded ADVANCE women to employability action research project (http://www.tees.ac.uk/depts/socialfutures/research26.cfm ). Prior to this she was the researcher on a range of ICT and social inclusion research projects including: Rebooting Communities? An investigation of the role of ICTs in regenerating two coastal communities’ (2006-2007); Digital Arts for minority ethnic women; exploring support models for minority ethnic women experiencing domestic violence (2005-2007); Mobile Lives: young people and mobile technologies; a community appraisal of the ICT needs of Minority Ethnic men and women; and the Nisaa Project which explored health and well being opportunities for Minority Ethnic women. Carrie specialises in qualitative and action research methods and her research interests include: sociology of ICTs and community media; gender and technology studies; gender and leisure; social identities; and community studies. She is particularly interested in the ways in which ICTs can be used to facilitate social inclusion through participatory research approaches.
